Cubs’ Rachel Folden is swinging away at stigma that ‘women can’t coach baseball’

This offseason, the Cubs hired Rachel Folden as a hitting coach — the same day the Yankees hired Rachel Balkovec to a similar role. It was historic because they are the first women in such roles, and because few jobs in sports are more hands-on.

When youth baseball takes the field once again this summer, a unique team will be among the ranks. The Humboldt Park Gators is Chicago’s only all-girl team now entered to play in a youth league against predominantly boy teams. They formed last summer and began practicing just a few hundred yards away from the lagoon where ‘Chance the Snapper’ had been spotted, hence the name! Under Coach Chip Mitchell’s guidance, the girls have been practicing indoors for most of the winter.

The first ever girls baseball Elite Development Invitational is scheduled to take place June 26 – July 2 at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, FL…. – Major League Baseball

All,

The first ever girls baseball Elite Development Invitational is scheduled to take place June 26 – July 2 at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, FL. The week-long development event is intended for 14-17 year old (as of June 1, 2020) female baseball players interested in continuing to play the sport at an elite level. The application for the event is now open through April 12, 2020.

http://www.mlbyouthplayerdevelopment.com/events/1574098-2020-girls-baseball-elite-development-invitational—application

Spots in the event are limited, and filing out the application does not guarantee that the applicant will be selected to participate. Additionally, please note that there are no exceptions to the age requirement, regardless of an athlete’s talent or experience.

Please note that international applicants are welcome to apply, and you should write your city, state/province, and country in the application as there are no dropdown options to indicate this. Please select any state when you come to this question in the application.

Applicants are required to submit video as part of the application. Applications without video will not be considered. Video can either be uploaded directly to the platform, or you can provide a link to video housed on another website (YouTube, Dropbox, etc.). While any performance video is welcome, we prefer video of the athlete in a practice or training rather than in a game so that we can see her mechanics more clearly.

Final selections for Elite Development Invitational will be made by the end of April.

If you have any questions, please email girlsbaseball@mlb.com.

Thank you,

Liz
