Oz Sailors, a pioneering woman in baseball who pitched in college, played professionally around the world and later coached at two Bay Area high schools, died last week at age 31.

Baseball for All, a nonprofit providing opportunities for girls and women in the game, announced Sailors’ death Friday on social media. She had been diagnosed with a brain illness, according to the organization, and passed away while surrounded by family.

“For over a decade, Oz was an integral figure in growing girls’ baseball and impacted the lives of countless players,” Baseball for All said in its Instagram post. “She had an infectious personality and always greeted you with a grin — a pure sense of joy and passion for the game she shared with all so generously.”

Sailors spent two years as varsity head coach at Moreau-Hayward before taking over at Urban School of San Francisco in 2021. She was believed to be the only female varsity baseball head coach in the country at the time…
