BENNINGTON, Vt. — Holding the narrowest of leads, Rachel Hale kept the boy subdued on his hands and knees, then on his belly. Both wrestlers were 103 pounds of leverage and intent. She hooked her leg tightly around his, flattening his hips toward the mat, trying to turn him on his back and pin his shoulders, careful not to let him score decisive points by escaping or reversing positions or pinning her.

Rachel Hale, top, won the 103-pound final at the Vermont high school championships Saturday, becoming the first girl to win a title in her state.

Both Rachel and Zak Hale won state championships Saturday.

The tiny gym was packed Saturday night, and the fans grew loud, as if the volume of their voices could hurry the clock toward history. Finally, the referee tapped Hale, a 15-year-old freshman, on the shoulder. She got to her feet and leapt jubilantly, and the referee raised her right arm.

By a gripping 10-9 decision, Hale became the first girl in Vermont and the third girl in the nation ever to win a state wrestling championship while competing against boys, according to the United States Girls Wrestling Association

… What’s the scouting report on her?’ one minor league hitter joked before stepping into the batter’s box.

Indians Manager Manny Acta described her work as ‘pretty impressive.’

‘It was wonderful to have her pitch for us because she’s from Cleveland,’ Acta said. ‘I believe her dad and grandfather still have season tickets. It’s multigenerational. For her to do this with our ball club was very special.’

Raised in Cleveland, where she began playing baseball at 5, a young Siegal would lie in bed at night dreaming of a career in professional baseball, and of one day taking the field as a member of the Indians…

Though an all-girls baseball team suffered two losses at this weekend’s Midland Winter Blast tournament, each player left with a bigger, united dream still intact. Each wants to be the first female to make it to the big leagues.

The Dream Team, composed of 11 girls between the ages of 12 and 13 from across the U.S., defeated a boys team from Hobbs by 10-2 on Saturday, and subsequently lost 7-8 to the Diamond Kings from Odessa. On Sunday, the team lost 0-2 in the last inning on two RBIs after intentionally walking a player from Crossfire Baseball of Amarillo.

The team was formed after the girls had a chance to play together in a tournament last summer and has already made history by being the first all-girls baseball team to be invited to the USSSA World Series baseball tournament in July. Assistant coach Randall McCrackin said the team’s ultimate goal this year is to qualify for the USSSA Elite World Series, which consists of the top 32 baseball teams of each age group in the U.S.

‘The girls love to play baseball,’ McCrackin said. ‘They don’t want someone to throw them the ball slower or for the field to be smaller…’
