‘There was a foul tip in there,’ said former Cal pitcher Doug Nickle, leading the effort to get the sport reinstated. ‘All we asked for is another pitch.’

By all accounts, they will get that pitch.

Nickle and his group will meet with athletic director Sandy Barbour and other university officials this week to discuss what needs to happen for Cal baseball to return.

‘Conversations between key people on campus and Cal baseball supporters are ongoing,’ UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said. ‘Now we focus on the future and the possible reinstatement of Cal baseball if and when sufficient funds are raised to support the team’s expenses…

… What’s the scouting report on her?’ one minor league hitter joked before stepping into the batter’s box.

Indians Manager Manny Acta described her work as ‘pretty impressive.’

‘It was wonderful to have her pitch for us because she’s from Cleveland,’ Acta said. ‘I believe her dad and grandfather still have season tickets. It’s multigenerational. For her to do this with our ball club was very special.’

Raised in Cleveland, where she began playing baseball at 5, a young Siegal would lie in bed at night dreaming of a career in professional baseball, and of one day taking the field as a member of the Indians…

All-girls baseball team aims for World Series and beyond -Posted: Sunday, February 20, 2011 10:29 pm | Updated: 1:20 am, Mon Feb 21, 2011 By Sarah Higgins –  Mywesttexas.com: Top Stories

Though an all-girls baseball team suffered two losses at this weekend’s Midland Winter Blast tournament, each player left with a bigger, united dream still intact. Each wants to be the first female to make it to the big leagues.

The Dream Team, composed of 11 girls between the ages of 12 and 13 from across the U.S., defeated a boys team from Hobbs by 10-2 on Saturday, and subsequently lost 7-8 to the Diamond Kings from Odessa. On Sunday, the team lost 0-2 in the last inning on two RBIs after intentionally walking a player from Crossfire Baseball of Amarillo.

The team was formed after the girls had a chance to play together in a tournament last summer and has already made history by being the first all-girls baseball team to be invited to the USSSA World Series baseball tournament in July. Assistant coach Randall McCrackin said the team’s ultimate goal this year is to qualify for the USSSA Elite World Series, which consists of the top 32 baseball teams of each age group in the U.S.

‘The girls love to play baseball,’ McCrackin said. ‘They don’t want someone to throw them the ball slower or for the field to be smaller…’

“SABR DAY” TO BE CELEBRATED ACROSS NORTH AMERICA ON JANUARY 30

On Saturday, January 30, 2010, members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) will come together to celebrate SABR and all things baseball. Chapters and members across the US and Canada will gather for everything from Hot Stove discussions to research presentations to guest talks by former players to a Dice Base Ball Tournament (scheduled to be played outside in Vermont).

SABR has 55 chapters in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Approximately 10% of the membership attends SABR’s national convention each year, making local chapters a key part of the nationwide (and worldwide) community of baseball fans who make up the heart of SABR. SABR Day is an alternative to gathering members in one place by having as many members as possible come together on the same day—regardless of where they live. And every SABR Day gathering is open to all baseball fans; SABR membership is not required.

The Society for American Baseball Research is an international, member-driven nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster the research, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record of baseball. More information is available on SABR’s website at: http://www.sabr.org.

A sampling of scheduled events and locations is below. The full list of chapter and member events is available at: http://www.sabr.org. All times are local times on January 30, 2010.
