Punjab outclassed Balochistan 17-7 to win the 5th National Baseball Championship . Five teams, four provincial and one from federal capital, Islamabad, took part in the 3-day Event that concluded on December 17. The Championship was organized under the auspices of Pakistan Federation Baseball . Pakistan Federation Baseball (women wing) Chairperson Ms Zubia Rubab Malik inaugurated the Championship in a colorful ceremony amidst a large number of cheering baseball fans present in the picturesque ground of Kinnaird College. The Balochistan Minister for Foof Mir Ali Madad Jatik was the chief guest on the concluding ceremony. Punjab has won the title for the record fourth time. Balochistan has reached into the final defeating the defending champion NWFP.

First Day: In the inaugural match Punjab outclassed Islamabad by a wide margin of 22-4. Punjab scored five runs in the first innings. Batters Asama and Tahira scored three runs each while Nadia Butt made one run. Islamabad could score one run only. Fatima was the lone scorer. In the second innings Punjab batters added three more runs to their team’s total. Nashemen, Nazia Naz and Niva made one run each. Islamabad couldn’t score any run amidst smart fielding by Punjab players. Islamabad, however, dominated the third innings as they scored one run through Rehana while Punjab failed to add any run in their total. Punjab batters performed well and took control of the fourth innings by scoring six runs. Asama and Nadia Butt scored two runs each while Shamza and Balqees made one run each. Islamabad failed to add to their total. Punjab’s batters demonstrated their best game in the fifth innings as they added eight more runs taking their total to 22. Tahira, Asma, Nazia Naz and Ghazala scored two runs each.

Second Day: Balochistan defeated defending champion NWFP 11-9 in a thrilling match. NWFP batters dominated the first innings scoring four runs. Tahira scored two runs while Rashida and Zakia scored one run each. Balochsitan scored three runs through Fakhara, Tahira and Farzana (one run each). In the sensational second innings, Balochistan players curbed their nerves and succeeded in scoring one run while NWFP remained scoreless. Nevertheless, they took lead in the third innings making two runs while Balochistan batters failed to move their scoreboard. Balochistan batters, however, turned the complexion of the match in the fourth innings scoring five runs. Farzana, Tahira, Uroosa, Ma Gul and Nadia scored one run each. The NWFP batters added three runs in their total. In the final innings Balochistan battered scored two runs while NWFP batters failed to add to their total runs. DIG Headquarter Rai Altaf Hussain was the chief guest of the day.

Third Day: Punjab beat Sindh 15-11 to enter into the final. The winners exerted pressure upon their opponents since the start of the match and their batters Nadia, Ruqqaya, Asma and Rabita scored one run each in the first innings. Sindh’s batters failed to score any run. Punjab batters disappointed in the second innings as they could not add to their total. Sindh players fielded well and hardly allowed any liberty to their rival batters to score. Sindh took lead over Punjab in the second innings as their batters scored three runs. Punjab batters made five runs in the third innings. Sadia, Kanwal, Ghazal, Shumaila and Ghazala scored one run each. Sindh batters played excellently in their fourth innings and scored five runs. Zobia scored two runs. Mamoona, Mawri and Nazia scored one run each. Punjab consolidated their position by scoring six runs in the fifth innings. Sadiqa, Shumaila,Yasmeen, Shamshad, Shahida and Ruqqya scored one run each. Sindh could score only a run. Chairperson Chief Minister Task Force for Sports Ms Niva Usman was the chief guest of the day.

Final: Punjab thrashed Balochistan 17-7 to lift the trophy fourth time. Punjab batters made a stormy start and dominated the game right from the beginning. In the first innings they scored six runs through Tahira, Asma, Ghazal, Sadia, Aneela and Shumaila. For Balochistan Saadia and Palwasha were the scorers. Punjab increased their total to 10 in the second innings. Tahira made two runs while Sadia and Aneela scored one run each. Balochistan failed to score any run. Punjab looked complacent in the third inninga as their batters couldn’t score a run. While Balochistan staged a fine come back scoring three runs to reduce the lead 10-6. Tahira, Nadia and Sadia scored one run each. Punjab batters composed themselves in the fourth innings and made five runs to consolidate their lead while Balochistan failed to adde to their total. For punjab Khalida, Yasmin, Naila, Tahira and Shumaila scored onwe run each. Balochistan again performed poorly in the final innings and couldn’t make any run while Punjab batters continued to plunder runs. They added two more runs taking their total to 17. At the end the chief guest Food Minister of Balochistan Mir Ali Dad Jatik distributed prizes amongst the players.
